SpaceX Falcon 9 Static Fire Update 9 March 2010

On March 9 SpaceX performed our first Static Fire for the Falcon 9 launch vehicle. We counted down to an T-2 seconds and aborted on Spin Start.

Ferndale teacher named Ag Teacher of Year

The Distrit 1 Agriculture Teachers’ group has named Ferndale teacher Tony Torretta the Agricultural Teacher of the Year.

Torretta is now in the running for for the Washington Associationg of Agricultural Educators annual award.

Torretta teaches landscaping, metals, agricultural science and natural resources classes at Ferndale High School, but he also works with classes from other schools. He runs Project Pals, a mentor/mentee acitivity with second-grade classes from Central and Mountainview elementary schools. Torretta is also an FFA advisor and coaches an energy “Imagine Tomorrow” team that will compete at Washington State University this spring.

Torretta is also the district’s “Energy Czar,” running the district’s energy conservation program and monitoring usage outside of school hours.

Assumption receives $35,000 grant

Assumption Catholic School recently received a $35,000 grant from the Fulcrum Foundation, a non-profit group that helps Catholic schools in Western Washington.

$20,000 of the grant was given to help lessen the impact of the recession on the school and its families. With some people losing jobs or having other costs rise, private schools have been seeing delays in tuition payments.

The rest of the money, $15,000, is for the school’s Hispanic Initiative and will allow the school to bring on a family advocate and offer special tuition grants for Hispanic families.

Blaine School District refinances bonds

The Blaine School District recently refinanced some outstanding bonds to take advantage of lower interest rates.

The district refinanced about $14 million in outstanding debt, with a new interest rate of about 1.86 percent, compared to the 4.91 percent rate the district had been paying.

This move will save taxpayers about $755,000 over the next six years.
